My son Jesse Guess (Gass) was born March 9, 1783 John Guess (Gass)."3 Jesse Guess and John Guess appeared on the census of 1810 at Madison, Kentucky.4 Jesse Guess may have served in the War of 1812. A Jesse "Gars" enlisted August 15, 1812 in Thomas Morris' company in the regiment commanded by John Scott, and served until Octov3er 15, 1812. These militia volunteers were recruited among settlers north of the Kentucky River.5 [John "Oneal"] and ["Jonas Guess"] appeared on the census 1820 [Bardstown township, Nelson Co, KY]; where he is listed as John "Oneal" and is next to "Jonas Guess" who was probably his brother-in-law Jesse Guess.6 When Anderson county was formed in 1827, Jesse, who had been a justice of the peace in Washington county, was appointed presiding judge.7 He was associated on 26 September 1828 at Anderson, Kentucky; Indenture on 26 Sept 1828 between Joel and Sarah Downey of Viga, Indiana and Jesse Guess; sold land on Fox creek to Guess for $80.8 He appeared on the census of 1830 at Anderson, Kentucky; males: 1 20-30; 1 40-50

In 1838 he ran for the legislature against John Draften, and an anecdote connected with that election has come down to us from Jeremiah Posey who told it to his son, the late Judge Posey. That election lasted three days and in the last day when Esquire Guess was leaving home, his wife called to him, "oh Jesse, do you think you will be elected today?" -- to which he replied, I don't know Nellie, but I hope so." Then she interrogated, "well if you are elected to the legislature, what will I be?" -- to which he made the brusque reply: "you'll be the same damned fool you always were."      John Speed Guess was born on 18 December 1839 at Kentucky. He was the son of John Guess and Ann Skinner. John Speed Guess appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Western Subdivision, Madison, Kentucky, in the household of his parents, John Guess and Ann Skinner. John Speed Guess married Margaret Tillett on 26 November 1868.2 John Speed Guess and Margaret Tillett appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Foxtown, Madison, Kentucky, enumerated 7 June 1880. Their children Nannie B., Thomas, John P., Sally, Annie Dixie and William were listed as living with them.3 According to desecenant Tom Barnes, "Speed was what Kentuckians call a "rounder." He would walk out to Foxtown (the end of what is now Clay Lane) and buy whiskey made from a natural spring located there. Grandfather told me that Speed was too drunk in this instance to make it all the way home. Speed crawled up into a foddershock, leaving his toes exposed to the cold. Frostbite caused him to loose all but his little toes on both feet. My uncle said he would sell off land for a drink. Supposedly, Speed drank away many acres of land. Anna Wilson describes him as a playboy."4 John Speed Guess died in 1911.
