My son Jesse Guess (Gass) was born March 9, 1783 John Guess (Gass)."³ Jesse Guess and John Guess appeared on the census of 1810 at Madison, Kentucky.⁴ Jesse Guess may have served in the War of 1812. A Jesse "Gars" enlisted August 15, 1812 in Thomas Morris' company in the regiment commanded by John Scott, and served until Octov3er 15, 1812. These militia volunteers were recruited among settlers north of the Kentucky River.⁵ [John "Oneal"] and ["Jonas Guess"] appeared on the census 1820 [Bardstown township, Nelson Co, KY]; where he is listed as John "Oneal" and is next to "Jonas Guess" who was probably his brother-in-law Jesse Guess.⁶ When Anderson county was formed in 1827, Jesse, who had been a justice of the peace in Washington county, was appointed presiding judge.⁷ He was associated on 26 September 1828 at Anderson, Kentucky; Indenture on 26 Sept 1828 between Joel and Sarah Downey of Viga, Indiana and Jesse Guess; sold land on Fox creek to Guess for $80.⁸ He appeared on the census of 1830 at Anderson, Kentucky; males: 1 20-30; 1 40-50

The Presiding Justice, Jesse Guess, wrote the wills and deeds for his neighbors. In 1838 he ran for the legislature against John Draften, and an anecdote connected with that election has come down to us from Jeremiah Posey who told it to his son, the late Judge Posey. That election lasted three days and in the last day when Esquire Guess was leaving home, his wife called to him, "oh Jesse, do you think you will be elected today?" -- to which he replied, I don't know Nellie, but I hope so." Then she interrogated, "well if you are elected to the legislature, what will I be?" -- to which he made the brusque reply: "you'll be the same damned fool you always were." John Draften won the election and Esquire Guess removed to Illinois where he lived and died.¹⁰ " He appeared on the census of 1840 at Anderson, KY; males: 1 50-60 females: 1 10-15 1 15-20 2 20-30 1 50-60.¹¹ He witnessed the marriage of Joseph Siers and Mahala H.      John Guess was born in 1796 at Madison County, KY.¹ He was the son of John Guess and Mary Linsey.       John Guess was also known as John Gass, Gess, or Gist. He was born circa 1750. He married Mary Linsey, daughter of Leonard Linsey and Sarah Searcy, circa 1775. John Guess and his father-in-lawLeonard Linsey (listed as "Leo Linny") refused to take the ‘Oath of Allegiance’ on 5 August 1778 at Oxford District, Granville, North Carolina.² John Guess and Mary Linsey engaged in land transaction “John Guest bought 287 acres of land from Elisha Linsey with condition that John Guest is to maintain Leonard Linsey and wife Sarah for their lifetime. Wits:> Reuben Searcy, Elisha Linsey on 11 March 1780 at Granville, North Carolina.³ John Guess lived in 1789 at Madison, Kentucky; John Gess first shows up this year in Madison Co, KY tax records; usually listed as living on Jacks Creek with 84 ½ acres.⁴ He was living on 1 September 1795 at Granville, North Carolina; “John Gess of KY deed to William H. Searcy of Granville Co., for one-fifth part of an individual tract of land in Granville Co, NC."⁵ He and Jesse Guess appeared on the census of 1810 at Madison, Kentucky.⁶ John Guess died in 1822 at Madison Co., Kentucky.

     John C. Breckenridge Guess was born on 11 August 1852 at Fayette, Kentucky, USA.¹ He was the son of George Washington Guess and Phoebe Ann Stivers. John C. Breckenridge Guess appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Christy, Lawrence, Illinois, in the household of his parents, George Washington Guess and Phoebe Ann Stivers.² John C. Breckenridge Guess appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Bridgeport, Lawrence, Illinois, in the household of his parents, George Washington Guess and Phoebe Ann Stivers.³ John C. Breckenridge Guess married Amanda (?) circa 1874 at Illinois. John C. Breckenridge Guess and Amanda (?) appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Sumner, Lawrence, Illinois, enumerated 1 June 1880, where he is working as a painter. Living next to them are Fletcher Guess and his wife Mary.. Their children Charles and Alma were listed as living with them.⁴ John C. Breckenridge Guess and Amanda (?) appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Vincennes, Knox, Indiana, enumerated 30 June 1920.⁵

     John P. Guess was born in 1868 at Madison County, Kentucky. He was the son of John Speed Guess and Margaret Tillett. John P. Guess appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Foxtown, Madison, Kentucky in the household of his parents, John Speed Guess and Margaret Tillett.¹ John P. Guess married Minnie Lee Barnes, daughter of Noah Wilson Barnes and Rhoda Williams, on 6 November. John P. Guess died on 23 March 1920.

     John Speed Guess was born on 18 December 1839 at Kentucky. He was the son of John Guess and Ann Skinner. John Speed Guess appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Western Subdivision, Madison, Kentucky, in the household of his parents, John Guess and Ann Skinner. John Speed Guess married Margaret Tillett on 26 November 1868.² John Speed Guess and Margaret Tillett appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Foxtown, Madison, Kentucky, enumerated 7 June 1880. Their children Nannie B., Thomas, John P., Sally, Annie Dixie and William were listed as living with them.³ According to desecenant Tom Barnes, "Speed was what Kentuckians call a "rounder." He would walk out to Foxtown (the end of what is now Clay Lane) and buy whiskey made from a natural spring located there. Grandfather told me that Speed was too drunk in this instance to make it all the way home. Speed crawled up into a foddershock, leaving his toes exposed to the cold. Frostbite caused him to loose all but his little toes on both feet. My uncle said he would sell off land for a drink. Supposedly, Speed drank away many acres of land. Anna Wilson describes him as a playboy."⁴ John Speed Guess died in 1911.

      Mahala H. Guess was also known as Mabala H. Guess. She was born circa 1828 at Anderson Co., Kentucky. She was the daughter of Jesse Guess and Eleanor Richardson. As of 6 August 1843,her married name was Siers.¹ Mahala H. Guess married Joseph Siers on 6 August 1843 at Anderson Co, KY; husband listed as Cyrus Joseph.¹

     Mary C Guess was born in 1846 at Kentucky, USA. She was the daughter of George Washington Guess and Phoebe Ann Stivers. Mary C Guess appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District 2, Fayette, Kentucky, in the household of her parents, George Washington Guess and Phoebe Ann Stivers. Maryline Guess and James S Roswell appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Western Subdivision, Madison, Kentucky, enumerated 6 June 1860.² Maryline Guess and James S Roswell appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of township 50, Boone, Missouri, enumerated 1870, where he is listed as James Rosell.. Their children John A. were listed as living with them.³ Maryline Guess and James S Roswell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Perche, Boone, Missouri, at District 20, enumerated 16 June 1880, where the family name is listed as "Rosselle.". Their children John A. were listed as living with them.⁴

Their children James A. and John L. were listed as living with them, married daughter Parlee Brown Hawthorne with her son James, and a boarder James Hawkins, also were living with the family.

      Rebecca Guess was also known as Rebekah Gass. She was born on 10 April 1778 at Granville, North Carolina, USA. She was the daughter of John Guess and Mary Linsey. Rebecca Guess married John Neel Sr., son of Hugh Neel and Mrs. Hugh Neel, on 14 June 1798 at Madison, Kentucky.¹ Rebecca Guess died on 30 November 1828 at age 50.
