Robert Talkington

M, b. circa 1741, d. 9 July 1799
Robert Talkington was born circa 1741 at England. He married Elizabeth (?) in 1762 at Manchester, Lancastershire, England; Robert Torkington and Elizabeth Heiwood.1 Robert Talkington and Elizabeth (?) appeared on the census of 1790 at Greenville County, South Carolina; living in the vicinity are in-laws John Turnbow Sr, John Turnbow, William Turnbow, Henry Tarkesley; males 16 and above, 1; under 16, 3; free white females 7.2 Robert Talkington died on 9 July 1799 at Daysville, Logan, Kentucky, USA. Wayne L. Talkington said in his "Genealogy of the Talkington's & Long's" in 1972:" Boyds Marriage Index of Lancashire England lists ROBERT TORKINGTON married ELIZABETH HEIWOOD in Manchester 1762. I believe this to be the same couple as the above listed in the 1790 census of South Carolina. If their children were born in 1765, 1767, 1771, 1773, 1775, 1777, 1779, 1781, and 1783 STEPHEN born, the only one we are sure of the birth date. The nine listed in the 1790 census would account for all, except two up to and including Stephen. Could be others dead or Married and left in England. I feel that when many people of the same uncommon name as TALKINGTON live in the same small community as Daysville, Ky. they must be closely related. From the facts we have I am going to try and give some proof of kinship. Some may say it sounds like a big dream. But to me it makes sense and I will stand by it until proven wrong. Elizabeth's inventory was returned an ordered recorded Aug. 13, 1799. Elizabeth Talkington is allowed 160 acres of land as per her entry, 5/18/1801. JOHN TALKINGTON is allowed 200 acres of land date of 2/15/1802. So must be one of the sons under 16. If Bo. 1776 would be 14 in 1790. John Married LOTTIE SAPP Wash. Co. Ky. in 1795. In Feb. 1805 SAMUEL TALKINGTON withdrew his former claim of acres for land. Which must have been his claim for part of Roberts estate, and at April term of court Approval of writ of Aquaddammen for mill site, 11/14/1797. Samuel enters his earmark. So was old enough to be in Sheep, Cattle or Hog business. If born around 1774 would be 16 in 1790. So listed as one of the sons under 16 in 1790. The 1800 census records only listed the heads of families and not all of them. BETSEY TAULKENTON of Logan Co. is the only one listed of similar name in all of Ky. She must have been our ELIZABETH TALKINGTON of Logan Co. as Robert died 1799. John was Married 1795 so was on the records and not listed in the census. Samuel recorded earmark in 1797 so was on the records and not listed in census. The 1810 census of Logan Co. Ky. lists Elizabeth Talkington males 2un16, 1un26, Females 2 un 16, 1un45. JOSEPH TALKINGTON and ISAAC TALKINGTON must be Sons of SAMUEL TALKINGTON and Grand-Sons of Elizabeth listed as 2un16 with Elizabeth and not listed under Samuel. Elizabeth must have had an agreement with them that if they stay with her and help care for 150 acres of land allowed to her from Roberts Estate that she would will them this land. Elizabeth Talkington died Tue. Nov. 16/1813. and Joseph is appointed Adm. of her estate with Samuel Talkington his security in the sum of $600. I feel that Samuel was the father of Joseph and Isaac. Joseph being the oldest was appointed Adm. Sale of the estate Dec. 11/1813 returned and ordered recorded, 2/9/1816. JOSEPH TALKINGTON MARRIED POLLY PORTER, Father Thomas Porter gives his consent, and witness STEPHEN. Some purchasers at the sale being Samuel & Stephen Talkington and Joseph & Samuel Gordon. Stephen Talkington purchases Sapp land at sale. Stephen born 1783 would be 7 in 1790 so would be the 3rd. son under 16. 11/17/1820 Samuel purchased 98 acres of Joseph Gordon supposedly the land bought by Joseph & Samuel Gordon at the sale. 1820 Samuel sells 98 acres to Isaac Talkington & Darius Bainbridge. Isaac could be his son and Darius his son-inlaw. In 1820 land was patented to Isaac Talkington & Joseph and Sally, Talkington. That was before Isaac Married in 1824. 8/10/1831 they sell 150 acres to Geo. Clayton of Logan Co. Ky. which was land patented to Elizabeth Talkington where she lived, This must be the land willed to Joseph & Isaac by Elizabeth. Isaac Talkington Bo. 1795 Di. 1857. Md. April 1824 to ELIZABETH MORROW Bo. 1806 Di. 1851. 11/16/1846 Isaac bought land of COLEY MORRIS widow of Thomas Morrow. So from these facts, I believe that SAMUEL, JOHN AND STEPHEN TALKINGTON are brothers and the 3un16 Listed in census of S.C. 1790. That JOSEPH and ISAAC TALKINGTON are brothers and the Sons of SAMUEL TALKINGTON listed 2un16 with Elizabeth 1810.

Information on the children of Robert and Elizabeth is from R. Cecil Shipley_s Talkington genealogy report, Feb. 2, 2000. Lester, Neal and Allied Families, by Shirley Wimpey Ward in the possession of Marilynn J. Aromi lists only eight children: Samuel, born about 1774, John, Ruth, Mary, Hannah, Nancy, Margaret, and Stephen born in 1779.
