David Hodgkins

M, b. 27 July 1760, d. before 1810
David Hodgkins was the son of David Hodgkins and Mary Spiller.1 David Hodgkins married Patience Winslow, daughter of Kenelm Winslow and Ann (?), circa 1779; David is listed as from Ipswich, MA.2 David Hodgkins began military service on 11 July 1779 where he served as a corporal and fought in the expedition on the peninsula of Majorbagaduce (now Castine, Maine). British troops in the summer of 1779 had begun to build a fort at the the mouth of the Penobscot River. The battle was a major defeat for the Americans as the lack of cooperation between American naval and land foces led to the complete destruction oft he Massachusetts fleet of forty ships. Paul Revere, who commanded the artillery during the campaign, was later courtmartialed but acquitted.3,4 He ended military service on 24 September 1779 at Penobscot, Maine. He appeared on the census of 1790 at Nobleborough, Lincoln, Maine; next to David in the census is Ezekial Winslow, possibly a brother-in-law or father-in-law, and in the vicinity are also a David and John Winslow.5 He paid the 1798 US Direct Tax at Nobleborough, Lincoln, Maine.6 He appeared on the census of 1800 at Nobleborough, Lincoln, Maine; Listed as David Hogeskins. Living with David are four males under 10, 2 males ages 10-15, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 26-44. Also living next to David again is Ezekial Winslow.7 In 1804 David submitted a request to the town for financial assistance "for sickness in his family in times past." Hodgkins was 40 years old at the time and he and Patience had nine children. This request however was voted down at town meeting in spite of a 1794 law that stated, "Every town and district within this Commonwealth shall beholden to relieve and support all poor and indigent persons lawfully settled therein, whenever they shall stand in need thereof."8 He died before 1810; His wife Patience appears to be a widow in the 1810 census.
