William Goddard married Elizabeth Miles, daughter of Benjamin Miles and Elizabeth Elizabeth Child, in 1652 at Eng. William worked as a grocer in London. He engaged in some ill-begotten ventures and suffered financial setbacks as the result of losses at sea. His mother had lent an uncle in New England some money and when the uncle died, supposedly leaving property to repay the debt, he left for Americain 1665 to claim it. Unfortunately, no property to repay the debt was to be found. But Edward apparently found New England to his liking, and that, in addition to a plague then rampant in London, convinced him to stay. brought his wife a.2 His wife and three living sons arrived in Watertown in 1666.1,3 In 1666 emigrants were not allowed to leave with more than five pounds because of the religious persecution. William converted all his funds into merchandise and furniture and stored it with a friend. A fire broke out in London on 2 September1666 that destroyed 13,000 houses, including all his property, reducing the family to poverty.2 He was given a certificate in 1680--signed by pastor John Sherman--attesting to his qualifications to teach Latin to children. William Goddard died on 26 October 1691 at Watertown, Middx, Mass, at age 64.1
