Edward Goddard

M, b. 24 March 1675, d. 9 February 1754
Edward Goddard was born on 24 March 1675 at Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of William Goddard and Elizabeth Miles. Edward Goddard married Susannah Stone, daughter of Simon Stone and Mary Whipple, in June 1697 at Watertown, Middlesex, Ma. His worked as a weaver early in life but by about the time he married in 1697 he was the schoolmaster in Watertown. In 1707 he moved to Boston where he was a teacher, and in March 1717 he moved again to Framingham where he taught grammer shcool for several years.2 Edward Goddard died on 9 February 1754 at Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts, at age 78. The following biographical sketch of his character was taken from a newspaper published at Boston." Framingham, Feb. 9, 1764. This morning expired here, after a short illness of the epidemical fever, the Hon. Edward Goddard, Esq. in the 79th year of his
age. He was a person of very good natural powers, inquisitive and curious genius, industrious spirit and considerable improvements in both divine & political knowledge, esteemed for sobriety, integrity, judiciousness and piety from his youth, and married a virtuous sister of the Hon. Mr. Stone of Newton and the Rev. Mr. Stone of Harwich, being of so good a character and a very accurate writer and draughtcr in almost all sorts of instruments, he was in his younger time encouraged to keep a school for writing and arithmetic in Boston, where he behaved himself to great acceptance, contracted an intimate friendship with the Rev. Mr. Bridge of the first church, to which he joined; as also, with Mr. Jonathan Jackson, Mr. William Tillcy, Mr. Bartholomew
Green, Mr. Zechary Thayer, Mr. Andrew Elliott, Mr. Jonathan and Daniel Loring, and other serious and solid men who were zealous lovers of our civil and religious liberties, the doctrines of grace and vital piety, in whose society he continued and grew in
esteem and affection and with mutual pleasure, till purchasing a farm at Framingham, he thought it best for the sake of his children to live upon and improve it. He was many years in commission for the peace, nine years chosen and served as representative for the town in the General Court, and also chosen and served three years more in his Majesty's Council for the province. Being a person of such parts, improvements and principles, and of undaunted courage, he appeared always zealous for the doctrines of the Gospel of which he had a clear view; and for the privileges of these churches as held from the beginning; and he was one of the greatest and most steady patriots both of civil and religious liberties in their largest extent, that ever appeared in the General Assembly in his day. " He had the true spirit of virtuous Englishmen, hated flattery, fawning, courtship and bribery in his country's cause, feared no opposer, and was known to be so firmly attached to it, that nothing could ever warp him from it, and I believe no man ever dared offer him the least temptation which he would have resented in the highest degree as the greatest reflection upon him. On his death bed as in his life, he expressed his entire satisfaction in the Gospel way of salvation through the
mediation and righteousness of Christ, the efficacy of the Holy Spirit and the saving grace of God the source of all, as infinitely agreeable, and in which he hoped for perfect sanctification, pardon and justification and admission into the heavenly inheritance.
It is remarkable that on January 19, died his son, the Rev. Mr. David Goddard of Leicester, who left seven children, and on January 28, his son Benjamin of Shrewsbury, who left seven children, on February 4, his own consort above mentioned, and on the 9th himself, and all of this dreadful fever which has lately carried off such numbers in these parts of the country."

“The above was published by the Rev. Dr. Prince and Mr. Secretary Willard, both of Boston, and intimately acquainted with him.”.3
