"This is to certify that I, Thomas D. Casper, was a resident of the state of Missouri in the year 1838. I was not a member of the Church of Mormons or Latter-day Saints; but witnessed the following acts of distress. As I was on business, I inquired for Perry Moppin, and learned that he, with Samuel Snowden, Esq., had gone after Mr. Wilson, a Mormon, and had threatened and sworn to take his life if he did not tell his name; and they swore they had the tool to take his life if he had not told them his name. Further they agreed that the Mormons should leave the country of Missouri except they would deny the faith, or their religion. And I heard Anthony McCustian say that he would head a mob in any case, to prevent the lawyers from attending to any case of their (the Mormons') grievances; and he was a postmaster. And I saw two men that said they had been at Haun's mill at the murder; and one by the name of White, and the other Moppin stated that he had slain three Mormons. And I, Thomas D. Casper, witnessed other things too tedious to mention; and solemnly swear, before God and men, that what is here written is a true statement of facts relative to the suffering." on 16 March 1840 at Quincy, Adams, Illinois. Winston Newton Casper appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District 46, Lafayette, Missouri, in the household of his parents, Thomas Durbin Casper and Rachel Allison.1 A FIGHT AT CHURCH.
Three Men Severely Wounded.
On Sunday last, at Glenwood School House, about three ____ from this city, a fight occurred between two plucky Union farmers, who had been soldiers in the Federal army, and some seven or eight young buck rebels. The facts, as near as we can learn, are about these: C. B. Casper and Newton Casper, brothers, had each a small red, white and blue rosette pinned on their coats. Young G. W. Baker and others, commenced taunting the Caspers abut [sic] the rosettes, and finally they were ordered by Baker to take them off. The Caspers then quietly went out of the house, and sat under a shade-tree. Baker and his crew followed them. Baker asked C. B. Casper if he had a patent for the colors; Casper replied that he had not, but that Abraham Lincoln had secured a patent for them four years ago. Baker then said they were nice colors for thieves to wear; Casper replied that being the case, probably he would like to borrow them. At this, Martin Baker, a brother of G. V., cursed the Caspers with all the filthy language he could think of, and borrowing a pistol, jumped behind a tree, taking a rest, fired at Newton Casper, missing him; Casper returned the fire. At this the fire became general—some fifteen shots fired in all; C. B. Casper was shot through the fleshy part of the left shoulder—ball came out under the shoulder blade. Baker was shot badly in the thigh; after Baker was shot he run [sic] away—even threw himself head-long through the window into the house. Another “chiv.” whose name is B. Austin, then jumped out of the window, and commenced firing on the Caspers. Austin as shot on the left side of his face, breaking his jaw-bone, knocking several teeth out—ball lodging in back part of his neck; at this the rebels ran away, satisfied that the boys that wear the COLORS proved too much for them. About five or six rebels firing and one rebel throwing rocks, and two Union boys firing in return.
Although we deprecate outbreaks of any kind, we feel proud to see the colors come out flying. This country belongs to the loyal, true and brave, and if the blood of those pugnacious rebel youngsters cannot stand it, and will insult and provoke Union men without stint—the sequel of the affair proves that the Union men are ready to die by their colors. We hope for the sake of peace and quiet in this country, that the fast young rebel gents who are spoiling for a fight, will reflect a little, and forsake their impudence and turn their ambition to some more laudable pursuit.
The Casper brothers have fought and won under those COLORS, and they will wear them whenever they feel like. We believe with Gen. Dix—“The man that tears down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot.” Such sentiments meet with our hearty approval—any traitor who tears or attempts to tear down the colors of our country, should be killed—nor are we particular how the killing should be done.2
